Are you good without god?  A small but growing minority in America are more than happy to keep Christmas all about the presents and egg nog.  But if you are a regular viewer of Fox and Friends this is open season on atheists.  More on them in a moment but first the story that has a lot of fundies all in a heap.

As John Lennon said, imagine no religion.

As John Lennon said, imagine no religion.

After a series of transit ad campaigns this year in the United Kingdom and New York, the American Humanist Association is launching its own godless awareness campaign during the holidays.  ”Be good for goodness sake” is the message.  So what in the hell is wrong with that you ask?

One guy who is super pissed about people being good to each other for no particular reason is America’s favorite bigot preacher man Rick Warren.  Behold the inauguration day prayermaster spewing all sorts of ignorance on Fox News, which has no problem letting him go on and on and on with his hate.

Where to start with this asshole?  His first point is all about educating students about the history and meaning of Christmas and other holy days.  Of course there’s no mention of the history of Christmas and how it’s little more than a bastardization of old Pagan winter celebrations as a way to get 1st millennia heathens to latch onto the hot new Jesus thing.  Next Warren goes on to add Buddhists into his running tally of the world’s god fearing folk when even a cursory glance at Buddhism would reveal that it’s agnostic/atheist at its core.  The segment devolves into Warren trying to argue that it takes more faith to believe “in something coming out of nothing” as if that’s really what evolution boils down to.  Like most born agains, Warren seems like he would be a great guy to hang out with if you didn’t know he was leading the charge for legalized discrimination and other evangelical crusades.

Another example of Fox’s annual freakout on atheists was on the O’Reilly Factor the other night.  Now you can bash Fox’s primetime programming all you want and believe me there’s plenty to go around.  But if there’s one relatively fair show on Fox it’s O’Reilly’s.  But even he can’t resist bringing on a couple of FNC’s brain dead blondes to get all indignant about those creepy non-believers.

My main problem with Christians is that they can’t just keep their religion at home and at the church.  I don’t care what you do on your own time, just don’t bring it into my life or try to impose it on the rest of society.  Muslims need to confront terrorism and Jews need to confront apartheid in Israel.  But when it comes to here at home, Christians are the ones who can’t just lay off and that’s why I will continue to speak up as an atheist.

  1. [...] Humanist Association.  They’re the ones behind the transit ad campaign I mentioned in an earlier post.  The group was intimate, about 20 people.  Not bad for only having about 36 hours notice.  The [...]
